While we are seeing more and more limousines on the road carrying a variety of different people to a number of different functions, there are still many limo hire companies who are struggling in the current industry climate.
Some limo hire companies are combating their slow periods with working taxi runs at taxi prices just to get their cars out of the garage. For example, one customer in Manhattan called for a taxi to take him and his family from their hotel to JFK Airport. While they were waiting for the taxi to arrive, a limousine driver approached the family and asked them if they were the customers needing a ride to the airport.
The family did not order a limousine for an airport transfer but they were pleased and surprised when they got a ride to the airport in style. While there are many reasons for this, it is not unusual but it is a nice surprise for the customer.
The taxi company may have had a larger booking coming from the same airport and so sub-contracted a large limousine to pick up the group from the airport, while also taking the opportunity to use the limo on its way to the airport as well.
This is more likely to be the case as it is often cheaper for larger groups to hire a stretch limousine which can seat everyone, rather than several taxis. Many limo hire companies find it offensive to the industry that limousines are being offered at the price of taxis to do the work of taxis.
Limousines which are run at the price of taxis are not really able to offer the outstanding service typical of the limousine industry. They may offer better service and better vehicles than taxis, but they are not typical of the standards of service expected of regular limousine customers and passengers, so other limo hire companies feel that doing taxi runs with limousines is giving the industry a bad name and is not justified as a way to get the limousines out on the streets.
