We have already heard about the new rules at the Detroit airport where limousine chauffeurs are not allowed inside the terminal to meet their clients and help with their bags because of safety concerns.
After the recent airport safety scares, Manchester Airport is also enforcing the rule that no one can leave their vehicle for any time under any circumstances. For limousines, this means that instead of being able to leave their vehicle, run in, meet their passengers and help them out to the waiting limousine, chauffeurs now have to wait for contact via cell phone to know when their passengers are waiting. The parking area for collection vehicles at Manchester Airport is also not designed or equipped to handle limousines so the limousine is not even close by.
Before the events of 9/11, chauffeurs would meet 95% of their passengers inside the terminal. They would have the standard card or board with their passenger’s name on it and the passengers would receive that little bit of extra service which is the difference between hiring a limousine and hailing a taxi.
Now chauffeurs are either being barred from the airport terminals all together or they are following the route of the Houston Airport which is giving out security badges to the limousine drivers to allow them to wait inside the airport.
The security badges are obtained after fingerprinting, criminal background testing and briefing in the airport safety procedures. The problem with this plan however, is that it only gives access to limousine chauffeurs, not the general public so families and friends can not meet their loved ones at the gates.
Surely there is a workable medium where the safety of the passenger and the airport staff is protected, but the extra services of the limousine industry are preserved too.
